"In a strange coincidence, the very week that the Dream Home opened, at the other end of the Disney corporation’s spectrum, Pixar had just released the dystopian “Wall-E” — a film premised on a world choked by garbage and waste, and made uninhabitable, at least in part, by things like gargantuan homes that make little or no concession to the limited resources out there and our heedless lack of stewardship....

The feeling of the Dream Home is of a dwelling from 2004, before the subprime mortgage crisis and $140-a-barrel oil. It is an exurban mausoleum, representing the kind of house that can be reached only by a decreasingly affordable car.

Even the corporate planners’ equating of acknowledging reality with bumming people out seems kind of old school. The keepers of the Dream Home do not seem to recognize that we are shuddering breathlessly on the brink of a new cultural moment. THE POST MODERN HOME

The Decon style design incorporates a very contemporary architecture that accommodates a family of four (by the same principles as the traditional design pictured here). Rectangular forms intersect angles and curves for an exciting exterior and interior design. Parapet walls on the front and back can screen solar collectors set in rectangular grids. Low VOC and other 'green' components may be specified.

This is an open plan design with single Living and Dining rooms with a large Kitchen communicating directly into these spaces on the second level. Master and secondary bedroom is zoned apart from each other. Although located on the second floor this living arrangement offers more privacy from the street and better views. Vaulted ceilings in all second floors are more interesting and possible whereas impossible to achieve on a ground floor with rooms above.

Fifth-graders can create their dream home

Habitat for Humanity is looking for fifth-graders to participate in its eighth annual “Build a House…Build a Dream!” contest for kids April 4 at Drexel University.

Students are asked to create their dream home for the event, which raises awareness for affordable housing and funds for homebuilding programs for low income families in Philadelphia, Camden, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties.



Pupils can work individually or in teams to construct a three-dimensional model dream home and prepare an essay describing the creation.

In April, the models will be reviewed by professional builders, architects, engineers and designers. Winners will be selected based on originality, creativity, use of materials, appearance and effort. Every participant will receive gifts and the top finishers will get small cash prizes.

Since 2002, more than 4,500 fifth-graders representing 750 schools throughout the Delaware Valley have participated in the competition.
